Your role

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Producer, based in Quebec City, for the afternoon radio show Breakaway with host Alison Brunette.

Breakaway broadcasts across the province of Quebec on CBC Radio One, outside of Montreal. From our studio in Sherbrooke and the station in Quebec City, Alison Brunette and the team cover Quebec stories and introduce listeners to people from the Gaspé to the Abitibi to the Lower North Shore. The program is informative, energetic and fun all with a Quebec twist.

The successful candidate is a team leader who will plan, conceive, organize and/or develop the production of a live daily program. You are responsible for ensuring that the program adheres to CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic standards and practices and programming policies.

The producer is bilingual, knows the regions of Quebec and is excited to bring stories about this unique place to the audience.

There is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. You will also be responsible for the growth and development of the Breakaway team members. There is also a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others.

You will establish strong collaboration between the Breakaway team and other CBC journalists working across Quebec as well as at Radio-Canada journalists in Quebec City.

You will:

  • Plan, organize and develop program content, including assigning, researching and/or editing. As required, commission writing and/or research. Prepare scripts. In accordance with management objectives, determine the style, pace, tempo, lineup and format of the program.

  • Plan, select and request, in collaboration with station management, production resource requirements, including creative contributors and other participants, material and facilities. Be responsible and accountable for the program budget.

  • Plan the social media and digital strategies for the show. Oversee the show team’s workflow so that the digital requirements are met, regularly producing content for our various digital platforms, including the program website. Use all digital tools at your disposal for the digital stories (text, graphics, audio, video, images).

  • Evaluate all aspects of a production and programming; assist in evaluating the performance of personnel and freelance contributors.

  • Be responsible for providing regular feedback and check-in meetings with team members about the daily program and their growth and contributions.

  • Work to make our programming and our production processes inclusive, reflecting the broad and specific diversity of our audience across Quebec.

  • Bring a solutions-based lens to our programming and journalism.

As required, you will also perform the following tasks:

  • Lead, motivate and be responsible for the professional growth & development of team members on the program.

  • Determine the order and importance of various elements of a program.

  • Properly incorporate network segments to ensure on-air messaging, and work closely with News and Current Affairs to adequately cover local, national and international stories.

  • Participate in the station’s editorial and community outreach initiatives

  • Coordinate and supervise the work of contributors to the program or segment for which you are responsible.

  • Ensure you maintain a level of communication or rapport with audience members.

  • Include digital and other visual treatments in the planning and rollout of stories.

  • Edit and mix or direct the editing and mixing of audio elements in keeping with existing practices.

  • Log programs and music in appropriate information systems.

  • Perform other production and administrative tasks ensuring the smooth operation of your program.

  • Select music and sound effects.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A) Qualifications :

  • University training in a relevant field, or relevant experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Three or four years’ relevant experience, including two in broadcasting or a related field.

  • Advanced level for English (reading/writing/speaking).

  • Good spoken French and French comprehension.

B) Skills :

  • The successful candidate must demonstrate leadership, news judgment, creativity, team focus, good communication skills, and a strong ability to work well under pressure to tight deadlines.

  • You must also possess a keen interest in emerging technologies, keep up with local, national and world news, and have broad general knowledge.

  • Strong understanding of English-speaking communities across Quebec.

  • Complete an assignment.

  • Provide samples of previous programming if they have produced a show before.

  • Interview.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
