JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Vice President, Commercial Mid-Market is an officer position and part of Canadian Branch Management, this leader is responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence through management and leadership of all products under our oneworld+ product within Commercial Mid-Market including our Auto and International lines. Works in collaboration with the CNA Global Chief Underwriting Office and ensures effective development, management and implementation of strategic objectives and policies for Commercial Mid-Market, in accordance with the company's strategic plans.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
  • Develops and implements strategic objectives, underwriting strategies and best practices with substantial impact on the short and long-term success of Commercial Mid-Market, Auto and International lines in collaboration with the Global CUO.
  • Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
  • Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews.
  • Provides results to members of the Global underwriting management and senior management team and develops plans to resolve issues.
  • Monitors the usage and profitability of alternative pricing programs.
  • Drives adherence to underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for Commercial Mid-Market, Auto and International lines and acts as the highest senior level referral officer in Canada for exceptions to strategy, guidelines, and authority for Commercial Mid-Market.
  • Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control, Actuarial, Claim, Operations and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
  • Provides guidance and direction in the development of underwriting and training tools.
  • Leads, direct and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction.
  • Responsible for the development of underwriting strategies and position papers for emerging issues.
  • Maintains and develops relationships with branches, brokers, and customers across the country to assess risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging issues.
  • Participates in Insurance Bureau Boards to keep abreast of industry, rating, coverage and benefit issues. Fosters relationships with insurance leaders across Canada.

May perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Mastery of underwriting discipline and knowledge in the insurance field and a broad understanding of the critical issues in other related areas.
2. Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships), teams and/or matrix environment.
3. Strong leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Senior level knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
2. Typically, a minimum of 15 years of related work experience, with 10 years management experience.
3. Chartered Insurance Professional, Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional, or Certificate in Risk Management preferred.
