Your role
 
CBC Montreal is looking for an excellent journalist and visual storyteller to join our newsroom in Montreal as a Video-Journalist. 
 
Our ideal candidate is someone who loves local news and thrives in a deadline-driven, breaking news environment. You pitch original stories with angles rooted in the needs of our audience, and relish the chance to tell stories of Montrealers making a difference in their community. 

Your professional and personal experiences have set you up to tell stories in an inclusive manner. We are looking for a Video-Journalist who is tapped into local communities to bring their voices and stories forward.

You are comfortable shooting and editing your own material and going live with the story on our digital, streaming and broadcast platforms on TV and radio. You love to try new ways of telling visual stories, and are comfortable talking to digital and social audiences.

You work well as part of a team and get satisfaction from group success and individual wins. 

As a Video-Journalist, you will shoot and edit footage, write copy, and produce live or packaged reports for CBC platforms. 

The schedule for this position is based on rotation-based shift work and may include working during weekdays, weekends and evenings. 

Duties:

  • Keep up with current events by consulting a variety of sources.

  • Forge and maintain contacts with various sources.

  • Propose and receive topics for news items, reports, interviews, and special features.

  • Research, gather, evaluate and check all material on the story being covered.

  • Plan reports around the story being covered. Conduct interviews, assess their relevance, and select the appropriate clips.

  • Scout locations. Set up and operate a handheld video camera and related equipment. Ensure the highest-quality audio and visuals.

  • Provide lighting for subjects or backgrounds. Select and shoot footage. Prepare visuals for reports, ensuring that they comply with technical and aesthetic requirements for broadcasts.

  • View footage and prepare shot and sequence lists.

  • Decide on story angles. Script and narrate reports. Prepare intros. Draft various documents in a style that suits the medium.

  • Edit your reports.

  • Convey information through various means (for example, news copy, clips, features, reports and interviews).

  • Deliver on-air reports.

  • Inform newsroom management of any event that warrants a news bulletin or special coverage.

  • Ensure the availability of the resources required to produce your reports.

  • Drive a news vehicle.

  • Ensure that your equipment is in good working order. If necessary, conduct minor emergency repairs.

  • Create a bank of images and archival material.

  • Perform all other related duties as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • Three (3) years experience in journalism or the equivalent 

Qualifications:

  • Extensive general knowledge

  • Good knowledge of current events

  • Fluent in the working language

  • Very good knowledge of the other official language

  • Solid command of communication skills specific to the medium as well as interview techniques

  • Knowledge of video and editing techniques

  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Valid driver’s licence
