In Budget 2023, the Government of Canada announced that PSP Investments would act as the independent and exclusive investment manager for the Canada Growth Fund (CGF) a $15 billion investment vehicle that was established to support the growth of Canada’s clean economy. As the investment manager of CGF, PSP Investments will provide the full suite of investment management services to CGF, covering the entire investment and asset management lifecycle.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Canada Growth Fund Investment Management (CGFIM) team is a new team created within PSP to manage the C$15bn Canada Growth Fund. CGF’s mandate is to catalyze substantial private sector investment in Canadian low-carbon projects, technologies, businesses, and supply chains by deploying innovative funding structures that help mitigate certain risks and uncertainties inherent to investing in the low-carbon economy. CGF is investing in Canadian projects and companies across themes such as carbon capture, hydrogen, renewable natural gas, clean technology, and critical minerals.

Size of the team:

The team currently consists of approximately 33 professionals and is growing to support the execution of CGF’s mandate.

ABOUT YOUR ROLE

As Senior Analyst, Canada Growth Fund Investment Management, you will be actively participating in the energy transition in Canada, deploying and managing CGF’s capital, shaping strategy and executing investments with a focus on low carbon supply chains including critical minerals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess investment opportunities in the critical minerals commodities and technologies (including relevant regulatory and policy frameworks), execute transactions, and be involved in post-investment asset management

  • Actively participate in the mining industry in Canada by developing relationships with strategics and investors, attend industry/banker meetings, build sector knowledge, and maintain ongoing market awareness

  • Analyze and review key trends in mining as it pertains to the energy transition and domestic supply chains, conduct ad hoc deep dive research, prepare supporting analysis, interact with industry experts

  • Research relevant public information, keep abreast of important industry developments and publications and disseminate relevant information to the rest of the team

  • Participate in the investment appraisal process (build detailed operational and financial models for upstream, midstream or downstream mining and / or industrial assets, determine and substantiate key valuation assumptions, conduct sensitivity analyses on main value drivers)

  • Actively contribute to due diligence activities conducted on potential opportunities, including coordination and review of the work performed by third-party advisors (commercial, environmental, technical, legal, financing, accounting, tax, environmental, etc.)

  • Form a view on an appropriate expected return, commensurate with the level of risk embedded in the underwritten business plan, through the lens of CGF’s mandate

  • Assist deal teams in the determination of material ESG factors and calculation of impact metrics, including avoided emissions and economic benefits associated with transactions

  • Participate in the preparation of investment memorandums and presentation of recommendations to the investment committees

  • Develop new and cultivate existing network of industry contacts to improve access to information for the entire team

Note: The position requires travel within Canada and potentially internationally.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Master’s degree in a relevant field, an asset

  • Professional designation such as CPA ,MBA CFA or CBV, considered an asset

  • One (1) to four (4) years of relevant  experience within the mining industry with a focus on mining investing and/or investment banking/corporate finance/transaction services

  • Solid understanding of financial statements, excellent analytical skills, and sound critical judgement

  • Being a team player who enjoys a high-performance culture

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively

  • A respect for differences of opinion and an inclusive mindset

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Tools (more specifically Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and financial analytical tools and databases such as Capital IQ and Bloomberg

  • Good communications skills in English and French (or willingness to learn) (regular interactions in English with investment partners based outside of Quebec. Example: peers, bankers, brokerage firms, etc. and PSP employees in our offices in Hong Kong, London and New York, and interactions in French with employees in our local offices in Montreal and Ottawa)
