The role involves leading EMC/EMI analysis for satellites, developing test plans, delivering analyses, and mentoring junior engineers in compliance processes.
Job Overview:We are seeking an experienced Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) System Engineer SME to lead EMC/EMI analysis and testing at the satellite level for commercial space applications. The ideal candidate will have hands-on expertise in conducted and radiated EMC/EMI analysis, with a deep understanding of satellite system design and mission requirements. This role will involve leading system-level analyses, supporting the development and review of EMC/EMI test plans, and ensuring compliance with mission and launch vehicle compatibility requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead System-Level EMC/EMI Analysis: Perform comprehensive analyses, incorporating:
- Mission requirements, including frequency bands of operation, payload types, and antenna coupling.
- Unit specifications and their integration within the spacecraft.
- Spacecraft cavity geometry, multi-layer insulation (MLI) placement, and unit arrangement on spacecraft panels.
- Coupling effects between DC and RF connections and spacecraft units.
- Evaluation of spacecraft panel shielding effectiveness.
- Develop and Review Test Plans: Support the creation and review of EMC/EMI satellite test plans to ensure robust validation of system performance.
- Deliver Key Analyses:
- Conducted Emissions/Conducted Susceptibility (CE/CS) analysis for satellite auto-compatibility.
- Radiated Emissions/Radiated Susceptibility (RE/RS) analysis for satellite auto-compatibility.
- RE/RS analysis for launch vehicle compatibility.
- Magnetic field analysis at the satellite level.
- Surface charging analysis at the satellite level.
- Internal charging analysis at the satellite level.
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with systems engineers, payload designers, and integration teams to ensure EMC/EMI compliance throughout the satellite development lifecycle.
- Provide Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers and serve as the primary point of contact for EMC/EMI-related technical decisions.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 7-10 years of hands-on experience in EMC/EMI analysis and testing for satellite or aerospace systems.
- Proven expertise in conducted and radiated EMC/EMI analysis at the system level for commercial satellite applications.
- Experience with spacecraft cavity design, shielding effectiveness, and coupling effects (DC and RF).
- Familiarity with launch vehicle compatibility requirements and standards.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in EMC/EMI analysis tools (e.g., CST, FEKO, or similar electromagnetic simulation software).
- Strong understanding of satellite mission requirements, including frequency bands, payload types, and antenna interactions.
- Knowledge of industry standards such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, or ECSS-E-ST-20-07C for EMC/EMI compliance.
- Soft Skills:
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with commercial satellite programs and familiarity with regulatory requirements for commercial space applications.
- Prior involvement in writing or reviewing EMC/EMI test plans for satellite systems.
- Knowledge of spacecraft environmental effects, such as surface and internal charging in space environments.
