Energy Department 

The Energy Department is dedicated to managing and optimizing the energy resources required to power our data centers while promoting sustainability and efficiency. The Energy department plays a critical role in ensuring our power solutions are cost-effective for our tenants, support speed to market, have sufficient scale to meet growing AI load, and resilient to energy market fluctuations. The team focuses on energy procurement from utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), energy marketers, and renewable energy technology providers.  

Position Overview 

This role can be based remotely in the US

The Director of Energy Business Development will lead strategic initiatives to secure, develop, and optimize power solutions for our organization, with a focus on data center and high-load energy projects. This role will build and manage relationships with utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and other key energy partners, while identifying and acquiring powered land and implementing innovative energy strategies, including self-generation and renewable energy integration. The ideal candidate will combine deep energy market expertise with strong business development skills to ensure the organization’s long-term competitive advantage in energy procurement and sustainability. 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Strategic Relationship Management – Establish, cultivate, and maintain high-level partnerships with utilities, IPPs, renewable energy developers, transmission providers, and other strategic partners. 

  • Powered Land Acquisition – Identify, evaluate, and secure powered land opportunities aligned with organizational growth and energy requirements. 

  • Partner Strategy Development – Vet and negotiate partner strategies for self-generation, renewable energy projects, microgrids, and energy storage solutions. 

  • Opportunity Pipeline Oversight – Develop and manage a comprehensive funnel of powered land and energy project opportunities from lead generation through contract execution. 

  • Technical Due Diligence – Conduct and oversee preliminary technical reviews, including load analysis, interconnection feasibility, and infrastructure assessments. 

  • Performance & Strategy Reporting – Deliver high-quality reports, dashboards, and presentations on energy performance, project status, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership, board members, and external stakeholders. 

  • Market Intelligence – Monitor energy market trends, regulatory changes, and technology advancements to inform strategic decision-making and maintain competitive positioning. 

 

Additional Duties 

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members on energy strategy and project execution. 

  • Represent the company at industry conferences, regulatory hearings, and stakeholder meetings. 

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by executive leadership. 

  • Travel up to 50%, or as business needs.

 

Job Requirements 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, business, environmental science, or equivalent related field experience.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Experience 

  • 5–10 years of progressive experience in energy business development, procurement, or strategy, preferably within the data center, large-scale industrial, or technology sector. 

  • Proven success in structuring and contracting strategic relationships within the energy sector, including utilities, renewable energy developers, and large-scale power providers. 

  • Strong track record in energy procurement, supplier negotiations, and complex project delivery. 

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multi-million-dollar energy infrastructure projects. 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Exceptional leadership and project management skills, with the ability to drive initiatives across multiple internal and external stakeholders. 

  • In-depth knowledge of wholesale and retail energy markets, renewable energy technologies, transmission planning, and interconnection processes. 

  • Familiarity with power purchase agreements (PPAs), energy hedging strategies, and sustainability frameworks (e.g., RE100, Science-Based Targets). 

  • Proficiency in energy modeling, data analytics tools, and sustainability reporting platforms. 

  • Strong negotiation skills, business acumen, and the ability to develop win-win partnerships. 

  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, capable of influencing at the executive level.

Additional Details 

  • Salary Range: $180,000-190,000 Base + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado market data and may vary in other locations) 

  • This position is eligible for company benefits including but not limited to medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and AD&D, short and long-term disability coverage, paid time off, employee assistance, participation in a 401k program that includes company match, and many other additional voluntary benefits. 

  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
