Reporting to the Director of Operations Support and In-House Production within the Business & Rights team, you will secure the necessary licences and clearances for music, photos, videos and other materials used in radio, digital and television programming. You will also clear various other rights, including synchronization and mechanical reproduction.

 

Additionally, you will provide guidance and ensure compliance with legislation, copyright practices and talent collective agreements to guarantee that all content is used legally and appropriately.

 

Key tasks:

  • Advise in-house teams on compliance with legislation, collective agreements and corporate practices regarding the use of music, text and other materials; notify staff of potential copyright infringements or high-risk practices, collaborating as needed with administrators and legal counsel by providing required documentation and information.
  • Evaluate rights clearance and royalty costs, providing accurate estimates to producers and administrators; conduct research to locate rightsholders.
  • Negotiate rights within authorized parameters (including broadcast, residual, synchronization and mechanical reproduction rights) to secure licences or clearances from publishers, agents, composers or other rightsholders for the use of music, text and other materials.
  • Work with production teams to forecast rights clearance costs; recommend alternative creative solutions to production teams to meet project needs; and suggest workflows to production teams for optimizing the rights clearance process and/or the process for documenting copyright assets.
  • Complete the appropriate forms and documents; prepare the necessary correspondence and reports based on available information, following up as required.
  • Familiarize other people with their jobs by explaining your own duties.

 

This is a hybrid role with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.


What you bring:

  • College diploma (DEC) and three (3) years’ experience in a role related to copyright and music clearance.
  • Experience negotiating and securing copyright and music licences for broadcast/digital distribution (in both official languages).
  • Knowledge of the media industry, as well as current trends and best practices in copyright and music clearance across radio, television and digital platforms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients over the phone.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite (Word, Excel) and Windows environments.
  • Bilingualism (spoken and written).
  • Familiarity with talent associations (including the UdA, SARTEC and AFM) is an asset.
