This role is for the Firstbase team who are dedicated to building our platform that enables companies to seamlessly procure, deploy, manage, and retrieve equipment for distributed employees. As a Staff Developer, you will directly influence this transition.

About you

We are looking for a Staff Software Developer to help lead AppDirect’s Firstbase engineering team through its next stage of scale and integration. This is a highly impactful, strategic role responsible for designing and evolving the technical foundation of our onboarding/offboarding, logistics, and procurement systems used by Advisors, Resellers, and end customers around the world.

As Firstbase enters its next chapter within AppDirect, you will shape core architecture, guide cross-team technical execution, and set engineering standards that raise the bar across the org. You will drive the modernization of legacy systems, build next-generation APIs and services, and partner with engineering and product leadership to steer the product roadmap.

What You’ll Do & How You’ll Make an Impact

• Technical Leadership & Architecture
• Own the architecture and evolution of critical microservices and shared components across Firstbase and AppDirect.
• Make high-impact technical decisions involving service boundaries, data models, messaging patterns, and long-term platform scalability.
• Drive modernization and decomposition of legacy systems, establishing migration strategies and engineering best practices.
• Systems Design & Implementation
• Build robust, scalable REST and GraphQL APIs using Java and modern frameworks.
• Lead the design and implementation of high-reliability messaging systems using Kafka.
• Model and optimize relational and document-oriented data storage across MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
• Ensure high standards in code quality through automated testing and CI/CD best practices.
• Cross-Team Influence
• Partner closely with Product, Operations, QA, Technical Consultants, and Support to align technical decisions with business strategy.
• Act as a force-multiplier by mentoring developers across multiple teams, elevating design quality, system reliability, and operational excellence.
• Proactively identify cross-platform integration opportunities and lead initiatives to align Firstbase capabilities with AppDirect’s core marketplace platform.
• Execution & Delivery
• Provide technical leadership within Agile teams—guiding planning, design reviews, and sprint execution.
• Investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex production issues spanning multiple services and components.
•  Champion operational excellence, including observability, performance tuning, fault tolerance, and resilience engineering.

What We’re Looking For

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• 10+ years of professional software development experience, with significant experience owning complex systems end-to-end.
• Deep expertise in Java, with strong knowledge of Spring (Boot, Data, Cloud) and Hibernate.
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and React in production systems.
• Proven experience designing and scaling microservice architectures, including REST APIs, event-driven systems, and distributed systems patterns.
• Proficiency in automated testing frameworks (JUnit) and quality-driven development practices.
• Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
• Experience building or scaling messaging solutions using Kafka.
• Solid understanding of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
