Hello, we’re Instrumentl. 👋

Nonprofits do some of the most important work in the world, and most of them are still managing grants in spreadsheets. We're fixing that.

Instrumentl is a profitable, hypergrowth, YC-backed SaaS platform building the operating system for grant-funded organizations. More than 5,500 nonprofits use Instrumentl to discover, track, and win grant funding, from local community organizations to the San Diego Zoo and the University of Alaska. Collectively they’ve moved over $1 billion through our platform.

We're growing quickly, customers love us (check out our G2 reviews!), and we're hiring people who want to build something that matters.

About the role:

We are hiring a Senior Product Designer reporting to the Head of Design. You'll own Manage, our post-award product area, where more than $1.1B in grant funding gets tracked, reported on, and kept compliant. This is detailed, unglamorous, genuinely hard work: three native accounting integrations that each behave a little differently, template-based expense imports layered on top, and federal grant compliance rules that run to hundreds of pages and carry real consequences when a nonprofit gets them wrong. You'll report to Hope, Head of Design, and partner with your PM and engineering lead on a product area that is still being invented. If you get excited by data problems that other designers find boring, this is the seat.

What you'll do:

    Financial Data & Compliance

  • Own end-to-end design for Manage, from discovery and research through ship and iteration
  • Shape how financial data is surfaced for people who are not accountants: budget versus actuals, burn rates, variance flags, forecast views
  • Design compliance review workflows against federal grant rules, where an error costs an organization its funding
  • Untangle how three accounting integrations and template-based imports present as one coherent experience
  • Discovery & Definition

  • Recruit and interview grant professionals, then turn what you hear into insight and shipped product
  • Write your own brief and set roadmap direction in partnership with your PM rather than waiting for a spec
  • Drive definition in greenfield areas including program financials and cross-functional workflows
  • Sequence the thousand things you could build into the handful that matter this quarter
  • Partnership & Craft

  • Design multi-stakeholder workflows spanning grant professionals, finance teams, and program staff
  • Bring a point of view into the room and push back when something is not right for users
  • Partner closely with engineering in a fast-shipping environment and measure what you ship
  • Contribute to the quality bar across Instrumentl's design system

What we're looking for:

    Required

  • 7+ years of product design experience with end-to-end ownership of a full product domain, not a slice of one
  • Experience designing in fintech or another highly regulated space such as healthcare, where compliance and data accuracy carry real consequences
  • Deep expertise designing data-dense B2B SaaS interfaces: financial dashboards, reporting views, tracking tools, or similar multi-entity systems
  • Ability to conduct and synthesize user research independently alongside your PM
  • Nice to have

  • Time at a smaller company, ideally under 100 people and under 500 at minimum, where you owned the whole domain
  • Prototyping with AI tools, for example building working prototypes in Claude or v0 Cursor that engineers can build from
  • Exposure to accounting tools, fund reporting, or audit and compliance workflows
  • Experience designing for nonprofits or social impact
  • Design systems experience
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards
  • Comfort with basic front-end concepts to collaborate closely with engineers
  • Experience mentoring other designers

Compensation & Benefits

For US-based candidates, the target salary range for this role is $160,000 – $185,000 USD, plus equity. Final compensation is determined based on experience, skillset, scope of responsibility, interview performance, and geographic location. We’re committed to paying competitively and equitably.
For candidates based in Canada, compensation varies by province and will be shared by your recruiter early in the process.

    Benefits

  • 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents)
  • Generous PTO, including parental leave
  • 401(k)
  • Company laptop and home-office stipend
  • Bi-annual company retreats
  • Instrumentl is evolving rapidly. You’ll always have new challenges and opportunities to grow here.

We are committed to building an inclusive workplace and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, or any other legally protected status.
