As Hiive’s first Data Scientist, you’ll shape our understanding of private market dynamics and elevate our external thought leadership through data-driven insights. Working closely with the Head of Data and company leadership, you’ll help define the data science function and maximize its impact. Your work will uncover how users find value in our platform, analyze trading dynamics and liquidity, and surface opportunities to improve products, operations, and strategy. By building analytics tools and translating complex questions into actionable research, you'll empower teams across Hiive to make smarter, data-informed decisions.

In this role, your responsibilities would include:

  • Working with business teams to understand data needs and identify new opportunities.

  • Leading data science projects end-to-end, from ideation to prioritization.

  • Integrating external data via in-house collection (e.g., web scraping) or partnerships.

  • Analyzing historical data using statistical methods to understand user behaviour, supply and demand dynamics, and financial index performance.

  • Presenting findings to various audiences, including executives.

  • Researching, standardizing, and documenting core business metrics and KPIs.

  • Collaborating with the data team on new data-driven products and data model improvements for data science use cases.

Required Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in a data science role (preferably in a marketplace/financial trading industry context), ML experience an asset.

  • Degree in Applied Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or related field.

  • Ability to leverage advanced statistical concepts and select appropriate methodologies for various scenarios (small sample sizes, highly skewed data, sparse or missing data, etc.)

  • Hands-on experience with data science workflows, tools, and best practices.

  • Strength and passion for generating insights from complex or confusing data.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; able to translate complex technical concepts into compelling insights and storytelling.

  • Exceptional data presentation and visualization skills.

  • Preferred stack experience:

    • SQL

    • Python

    • dbt

    • Snowflake

    • Omni (or Looker)

    • GitHub

    • Modern notebook tools (Hex, Google Colab, Snowpark, etc.)

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in marketplaces or financial industry.
