Reporting to the Director Legal Affairs, the Senior Counsel Labour and Employment Law will be responsible for all matters pertaining to health and safety, labour relations and employment law.  The Senior Counsel will also be responsible for reviewing policies and programs, providing training and drafting and reviewing contracts.

 Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on employment and labour law issues including recruitment, contracts, employment standards, terminations and compliance with human rights and occupational health and safety laws accross Canada;
  • Research and provide legal opinions on a variety of issues related to the business;
  • Manage workplace investigations and complaint processes;
  • Draft employment policies, handbooks and settlement agreements;
  • Manage employment litigation issues, human rights issues and labour relations matters, in collaboration with external counsel;
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on privacy-related matters to internal stakeholders;
  • Assist with training development, templates and other educational resources;
  • Stay up to date of relevant laws and regulations that apply to the organization worldwide and monitor changes that may impact the organization;
  • Support and provide counsel in all international expansion strategies and projects.

Required Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of experience as in labour, litigation and employment law;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of labour relations;
  • Member of the Barreau of Quebec
  • Good understanding of contract law;
  • Good understanding of provincial legislation outside Quebec;
  • Good understanding of Privacy legislation;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Bilingualism: Ability to communicate fluently in French and English, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong work ethic, creative thinker, and a self-starter;
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, analyze, summarize, and report on legal documents.
