POSITION OVERVIEW

 

BDC Capital is the investment arm of BDC, Canada’s only bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs. With over $8 billion in assets under management, we serve as a strategic partner to Canada’s most innovative firms, offering a full spectrum of risk capital—from seed investments to growth equity.

 

Reporting to the Director, Portfolio Strategy & Market Insights, the Senior Analyst will play a pivotal role in delivering high-impact market research and data analysis. This individual will generate strategic insights and thought leadership to inform investment decisions and portfolio strategy, drawing on advanced technical expertise, modeling capabilities, presentation skills, and deep industry knowledge. Their mastery of analytical tools and data will enable them to address complex, strategic challenges with minimal supervision.

 

The Senior Analyst will lead sophisticated projects to successful outcomes, producing forward-looking recommendations that support coherent portfolio construction and platform-wide decision-making. With a continuous improvement mindset, they will act as a trusted advisor, clearly and persuasively communicating findings to BDC Capital’s leadership and investment teams. Through this work, the Senior Analyst will influence stakeholders across the organization to align key priorities and contribute to the platform’s strategic direction.

 

Beyond their core responsibilities, the Senior Analyst will challenge resource allocation and team priorities, mentor colleagues, and foster professional development outside formal HR structures. Occasionally, they may also support other members of the Strategy & Operations team in structuring and implementing projects or initiatives, leveraging their strong understanding of the portfolio and strategic thinking.

 

 

 

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

  • Contribute to portfolio strategy and executive decision-making by conducting market research, synthesizing complex data, developing actionable insights, and supporting the formulation of recommendations for senior leadership

  • Develops a deep understanding of the venture capital and growth equity ecosystem in Canada

  • Take full ownership of workstreams within broader strategic initiatives, consistently delivering outcomes with minimal supervision

  • Offer guidance to peers and actively foster team-wide knowledge sharing

  • Cultivate cross-functional relationships, both within and outside of BDC Capital, and begin to influence outcomes through informal leadership

  • Demonstrate versatility across diverse functional domains, including investment strategy, business strategy, stakeholder engagement, and educational program development

  • Prepare detailed market analysis and run analytical forecast models as required and under the direction of the Associate or Director to support new projects, investment strategies and initiatives within BDC Capital

  • Work closely with high-priority initiatives tasked by senior management or the Shareholder on a time sensitive, ad-hoc basis

  • Support the team on innovative research projects for publication and thought leadership, leveraging BDC’s proprietary data sets

  • Help prepare for, attend and facilitate meetings with critical ecosystem players

  • Develop and maintain effective communication channels inside the broader BDC organization

 

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or equivalent

  • MBA, CFA or advanced technical master’s degree with a particular concentration in finance (MSc Finance), an asset

  • 4–7 years in a financial institution, investment firm, management consulting firm, or equivalent

  • Excellent Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills

  • Advanced financial, modelling and analytical skills

  • French and English fluency preferred (written and oral)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, combined with an ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, both internal and external

  • Strategic thinking and strong problem-solving skills

  • Outstanding dynamism, curiosity, motivation, self-starter able to work independently and in a rapidly changing environment

  • Experience in strategy and/or knowledge of VC & PE industry and tech ecosystem is a plus

  • Bilingualism in English and French is required.
