This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead
 

As an R&D Mechanical Engineer, you will make a significant contribution to the success of projects related to technologies, software, products and/or solutions, as well as to the management of associated intellectual property (IP), by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions. You will serve as the primary point of contact in Research and Development (R&D), software development, or product engineering for specific product-related issues and their maintenance.

This position supports ABB Canada’s Electrification, Installation Products division and is based in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The work model is hybrid, with 2 days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Technical / Scientific Expertise : demonstrate strong expertise in technologies, tools, and methods within your area of specialization by solving complex industrial problems, working independently, and mentoring junior team members. Be recognized as a subject-matter expert by other members of the R&D / Product Engineering organization. Maintain recognized expertise by integrating the latest technological advancements into your work.

  • Technology Orientation and Customer Focus : understand ABB’s key business drivers as well as the state-of-the-art technologies, tools, and methods in your field of expertise and the associated ABB products. Stay informed of current and planned R&D activities and use your unique technical expertise to oversee development tasks. Understand the value created for customers and the business through your contributions to ABB’s overall offering.

  • Innovation and Creativity : leverage your expertise to propose innovative and creative ideas for complex R&D assignments. Develop new solutions by following your own ideas, formulating hypotheses, and defining validation methods. Identify opportunities and propose R&D activities accordingly.

  • Projects, Processes, and Tools : act as a project leader or senior project member, contributing your experience to execution and the use of supporting tools, processes, and methods. Take applicable standards into account when developing new technologies and products.

  • Quality and Continuous Improvement : lead targeted product quality improvements within your area of responsibility and monitor results. Embed quality from the early stages of development and apply best practices in quality assurance. Understand the “voice of the customer” to improve product quality. Participate in and propose product and process improvement programs.

  • Teamwork, Collaboration, and Visibility : actively collaborate with technical experts from other domains and functions. Provide advisory services to internal and external stakeholders within your area of expertise. Represent your team in internal and external ABB forums and deliver comprehensive presentations.

  • Knowledge Management : document work results (discoveries, designs, software, etc.) to enable maintenance and continuous improvement. Write structured and concise technical reports and/or scientific publications for internal and external audiences. Share best practices in technical documentation with junior team members. Support colleagues by applying lessons learned to ensure high-quality, on-time results. Provide advisory services to commercial operations and customers.

  • Intellectual Property (IP) Management : understand and initiate IP generation within your area of specialization and contribute to the development of project IP strategies. Ensure the protection of new innovations and support the defense and enforcement of related intellectual property rights. Monitor IP-related issues and escalate to management when required.

Requirements

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in R&D engineering and project management

  • Bilingual in French and English; French is required, and English is necessary to communicate with customers outside Quebec

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Knowledge of UL and CSA standards (an asset)

  • PMP certification and Green Belt certification (assets)

  • Customer-facing experience (an asset)

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines
