Description

We are looking for R&D interns for summer 2026 to work on a variety of NLP projects within our new R&D division at Wordly, Inc. If you’re passionate about a variety of NLP problems and how they might apply to translation and transcription services, this role is for you. We’re looking for folks with a background in Computer Science, HCI, Linguistics or related fields.

You will be part of a small but mighty team of researchers that are focused on keeping Wordly competitive in an ever changing market. You will explore novel approaches to real-world problems that Wordly customers face, develop and prototype new algorithms and solutions, and collaborate with others on the team to push the state of the art of real-time translation forward.

Internships are approximately 12 weeks and will take place between May and September based on academic calendar and availability.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Computer Science, HCI, Linguistics or related field with a focus on NLP problems.

  • Ability to comprehend academic publications and reproduce results.

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills and ability to write academic publications.

  • Strong problem-solving skills. Can devise creative solutions and workarounds when problems arise.

  • Comfortable working with a fully remote team.

Desired Qualifications

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate meets some or all of the following desired qualifications.

  • Experience in processing real-time media streams, especially audio streams.

  • Solid understanding of various digital audio concepts (e.g., encoding/decoding, sample rates, FFTs, compression, filtering, etc.).

  • Solid understanding of text-to-speech generation processes.

  • Up to date on state of the art LLM and GenAI technologies.

  • Strong understanding of benchmarking and evaluation frameworks.

  • Understanding of how to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate user experience.

  • Understanding of phonetics, semantics, or another part of language and how to apply this understanding to technical solutions in translation, TTS, ASR, or other parts of the NLP pipeline.

Responsibilities
  • Prototype novel solutions for real-world problems that Wordly users may face or for new features that may enhance Wordly’s offerings.

  • Help write academic papers and patents as needed.

  • Collaborate with other researchers on potential solutions.

  • Positively contribute to Wordly’s engineering culture and processes to maintain a cooperative and supportive environment for all.

Located in Los Altos, California, Wordly is an exciting tech startup that is looking to grow its engineering and GTM teams! From virtual meetings to large, in-person conference venues, Wordly strives to provide high quality, real-time translation services in 50+ languages to anyone, anywhere. 

Wordly caters to numerous customers around the world which include local organizations and businesses; government entities; Fortune 500 companies; and much, much more. While this is a fully remote position, office space in Los Altos, California is available for San Francisco Bay Area residents that wish to utilize it.
