How it’s going (and growing) 

With a talented team of 750+ Roofsters, our collaborative, can-do culture is what fuels our growth. In 2022, we closed on our Series E, raising $240 million, and have offices in the Bay Area and New York City. Our growth includes recent acquisitions of Stessa (financial and asset management software), RentPrep (tenant screening and placement service for landlords), and Mynd (property management platform for both Retail and Institutional investors). In 2025, Roofstock took an ownership stake in Casago (short-term rental management services), expanding our platform to support both long-term and short-term rental investment services.

About the role

You will be joining a small but mighty design team, with the opportunity to shape not just your product area, but the broader design vision and practice across the organization. As a Principal Designer, you’ll be a strategic partner and design leader—guiding product direction, elevating our design standards, and mentoring teammates while still staying hands-on with critical design work.

You’ll drive the evolution of our investor experience, with a strong focus on mobile applications and AI-driven capabilities, helping us reimagine how customers engage with our platform. Working closely with product managers, engineers, and executives, you’ll influence product strategy, define end-to-end experiences, and ensure our design system and processes scale with the business.

This is a high-impact role where you’ll set the bar for craft, innovation, and collaboration across Roofstock’s product suite.

Responsibilities:  What you'll do

Shape product strategy: Partner with your peers across product, marketing, and engineering to define product vision and  influence roadmaps while keeping customers at the forefront. Drive experience excellence: Lead the design of complex, cross-platform experiences (web and mobile) with a focus on clarity, accessibility, and delight.Advance design systems: Leverage, evolve, and enforce our Design System to ensure consistency across platforms and touchpoints.

• Mentor & up-level the team: Provide coaching, feedback, and thought leadership for designers of all levels, fostering a culture of craft and continuous learning.
• Champion the customer: Use research, analytics, and user feedback to gain a deep understanding of user needs and translate insights into product innovation.
• Influence cross-org collaboration: Build strong partnerships across product, engineering, and business and operations partners, facilitating alignment and raising the quality of outcomes across the company.
• Evangelize design: Bring a strong point of view on product design and inspire the organization around the value of design and great user experiences.
• Execute at a high level: Deliver high-fidelity visual and interaction designs in Figma, creating prototypes and UI systems that set the standard for excellence.
• Push innovation: Stay ahead of design and technology trends—especially in mobile and AI—and bring forward new ideas.

Qualifications:  What'll get your foot in the door

• Proven experience designing consumer-facing products, including data-heavy dashboards or metrics (10+ years of experience)
• A portfolio that demonstrates strategic impact as well as excellent execution across multi-platform products.
• Mastery of Figma and experience evolving and scaling design systems.
• Experience influencing product direction and driving alignment across leadership, with the ability to simplify complexity into clear, compelling design visions
• Strong communication skills with an ability to articulate design decisions and advocate for design with teammates and stakeholders at all levels.
• Expertise in user-centered design principles and best practices
• Skilled in strategic partnership with the ability to help identify opportunities, refine problems and solutions, and help the team deliver great customer experiences
• Familiarity with front end software development languages and practices, enabling smooth collaboration with engineers.
• Past experience with real estate technology or financial services is a plus

Location

This position is classified as HYBRID within the Greater Oakland Area, with an expectation to be in-office on Tuesdays, Thursdays. Starting 2026, one additional day of the employee's choosing each week.

Compensation

$185,000 - $220,000 annual salary. The compensation range may be adjusted based on experience and location.

Pay Transparency

Our compensation reflects several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position represents the expected salary for this position.  Ultimately, in determining your pay it will be based on several factors including location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and other job related factors.  Roofstock is a total compensation company; the base salary is only a part of our total compensation package.
