How You Will Contribute:

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Field Service Project Management, as the Network Engineer, you will lead the post-sales engineering of a Ciena submarine cable system solution. You will be responsible for the production of detailed systems design, configurations, and test plans to facilitate the delivery of the solution by Ciena Project Management and Deployment Services. You will lead technical implementation of the in-station, segment, and network test plans. You will be the interface and technical authority for Ciena with the customer technical representatives.

 Perform the following for Submarine Deployment projects:

 

  • Liaise with Ciena Systems/Network Engineering/Opnet to agree high level designs and equipment BOQs. This may include third party equipment as well as Ciena equipment
  • Coordinate the production of low-level detail designs including equipment layouts, software configuration, and signal interconnect. The Project Engineer is the final approver of the low-level design
  • Bring together specialist engineering resources to build an integrated system. This may include DWDM transport, Switching, Data Communications Networks, Network Management and Synchronization
  • Define, coordinate production, critique, and approval of test plans and Methods of Procedure for in-station testing, segment testing, network testing, and traffic migration. These will include Technical Demonstration/Qualification, Factory Acceptance Testing, Field Deployment and Network Integration/Commissioning. It is important that the suite of test plans is complementary and practical in terms of proving compliance to specification, while being commercially viable within the budgets of the project
  • Technical interface to the customer for all facets of the technical solution. Responsible to bring in product specialists where necessary
  • Technically lead the field commissioning resources through in-station, segment, and network commissioning. Ensure the field commissioning team have sufficient skills and knowledge to fulfill the implementation. This will include internal Ciena Field Service Engineers and partner commissioning engineers
  • Manage the collation and documentation of ‘as-built’ data. Ensure ‘as-built’ data is compliant to contract, product, and system design specifications
  • Interface with Project Management, Systems Engineering, Field Service Engineering and Deployment Service teams to successfully deliver network and systems into the field
  • Manage the process for identifying technical issues during implementation and driving the root cause investigation to conclusion with the support Ciena Regional and Global Technical Support organizations. Brief the customer on root cause investigations and outcomes. Work with the project team to ensure resolution plans are compliant to specification and deliver the desired outcome
  • Continually review methods and procedures to identify and suggest improvements in time, cost, and quality

The Must Haves:

Technical Planning knowledge in some or all of the following areas:

  • Optical transmission systems (Submarine and Long Haul)
  • SDH and SONET switching
  • Ethernet transport and switching
  • DCN Networks and IP Addressing
  • Network Management Systems
  • Proven competence in Planning and Engineering of telecommunication equipment deployments from either a Vendor or an Operator perspective. Preferably in the Submarine market
  • Formal engineering education either in university or vocational via an approved and recognized apprenticeship scheme
  • At least 5 years’ experience of field turn-up and test on submarine DWDM systems

Pay Range:

The annual pay range for this position in US is $96,900 - 154,700

The annual pay range for this position in Canada is 89,100 - 142,300 CAD

Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
