The Manager of Claims will oversee maritime claims management, provide legal advice, negotiate settlements, and assist in loss prevention for chartering and operations.

We are currently looking for a Manager, Claims, who will be responsible for handling a broad spectrum of commercial maritime disputes, and for providing legal support to the Chartering, Operations and Fleet departments. Disputes include claims arising under charter parties, contracts of affreightment, bills of lading and other documents of title, and contracts for bunkers and necessaries, and claims of general average and collision liability. Knowledge of marine insurance and P&I liability claims is an asset.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING | THE ROLE
Key responsibilities include:
Claims Management (50%)
- Ensure high quality, cost-effective, and timely claims handling from first being alerted to a problem by the chartering broker or fleet operator until final resolution.
- Investigate facts, gather evidence, assess the merits of the claim, develop a strategy, and align across the commercial teams before executing its resolution.
- Negotiate the settlement of the claim and, where necessary, handle and/or oversee the arbitration or litigation proceedings.
- Where external lawyers and experts have been appointed, monitor closely the progress of any out-sourced work to ensure claims are handled efficiently.
Loss Prevention Assistance (50%)
- Provide legal advice to the Chartering, Operations and Fleet departments to help minimize the impact of future claims.
- Identify potentially problematic contracts, clauses or operational issues; providing commercially feasible solutions to the risks so identified; and staying up to date with developments in maritime law.
WHAT YOU BRING | THE PERSON
The ideal candidate has:
- Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in handling and managing commercial maritime claims
- Similar experience in private practice and/or P&I Club experience, is an asset
- Knowledge of marine insurance and P&I liability claims is an asset
- Broad claims experience, specifically in English maritime law
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required for complex case management
- Excellent communications skills (English, written and spoken) *
- Attention to detail and the ability to see tasks through to completion
- Competence with figures and voyage accounting
- Ability to work within a team and to collaborate across departments
