As the Manager, Business Development – Government, you will serve as a national subject‑matter expert and growth enabler responsible for supporting Wesco’s expansion across all levels of government, with a key strategic focus on Canada’s Defence segments.
This role will work coast to coast as a trusted partner to Wesco branches, business development teams, and suppliers -providing expertise, strategy, and enablement to help grow this complex and rapidly expanding market.
This is a unique opportunity for a professional with deep knowledge of federal government procurement and the defense sector, including supply arrangements, tenders, standing offers, and government buying behaviors, to help shape Wesco’s long‑term position in a critical national market.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Market Development
- Lead the development and execution of national business development strategies for government customers, with primary emphasis on Defence segments.
- Identify, evaluate, and pursue new business opportunities aligned to federal, provincial, municipal, and Crown‑agency procurement models.
- Analyze market trends, government policies, procurement vehicles, and competitive positioning to strengthen Wesco’s presence and share.
Branch Enablement & Support
- Act as a national resource to branches, supporting opportunity identification, pursuit strategy, and market entry.
- Partner with branch teams to support tenders, RFPs, RFIs, supply arrangements, and standing offers, providing guidance on compliance, structure, and best practices.
- Support branches in navigating Defence procurement environments, including understanding customer priorities, timelines, and buying patterns.
Government & Defence Expertise
- Apply strong understanding of federal procurement tendencies, including PSPC, DND, and other defence‑related agencies.
- Provide insight into government contracting frameworks, evaluation criteria, lifecycle purchasing, and long‑term contracting vehicles.
- Serve as an internal advisor on government and defence policies impacting procurement and supplier engagement.
Relationship & Ecosystem Development
- Establish and maintain relationships with key government stakeholders, defence partners, suppliers, and internal Wesco teams.
- Serve as a liaison between branches, suppliers, category management, marketing, and operations to ensure coordinated market execution.
- Support strategic partnerships, supplier alignment, and national programs relevant to Defence opportunities.
Growth & Performance Enablement
- Develop business plans and go‑to‑market strategies that support revenue growth, market expansion, and customer satisfaction.
- Monitor market performance, track opportunities, and identify risks and gaps, proposing solutions to strengthen Wesco’s competitive position.
- Support internal and customer training related to government and defence procurement processes, programs, and solutions.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience in business development, sales, or market strategy
- Demonstrated experience working with government procurement (federal preferred)
- Strong understanding of tenders, supply arrangements, standing offers, and public‑sector contracting
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze business, financial, and market data
- Proven ability to influence without direct authority and work cross‑functionally
- Comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, complex, and highly regulated environment
- Ability to travel 50–75% across Canada
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field
- Experience in or exposure to the Defence sector
- Knowledge of Canada’s federal procurement ecosystem (e.g., PSPC, DND, Crown agencies)
- Experience acting as a shared resource supporting multiple locations or teams
- Knowledge of Wesco’s products, services, and distribution model
