Junior Data Engineer / Junior DBA

GHY International has an exciting opportunity for the role of Junior Data Engineer / Junior DBA working out of our Head Office in Winnipeg, MB. 

The Junion Data Engineer/Junior DBA will support our Azure-based data platform built on Databricks, Delta Lake, and Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold). The role focuses on data transformations using PySpark, Spark SQL, and keeping our pipelines reliable and well-documented. We do not use on‑prem SQL - everything runs in Databricks.

What You'll Do:

• Maintain and enhance Medallion pipelines across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers.
• Build and troubleshoot transformations primarily in PySpark.
• Leverage experience with pandas, Polars, or Koalas as a foundation to learn PySpark on the job.
• Write, analyze, and tune Spark SQL queries in Databricks.
• Work with Azure DevOps (repos, pull requests, branching, CI/CD pipelines).
• Create runbooks, documentation, and improve monitoring, reliability, and operational readiness.
  

What You Bring:

• Strong SQL fundamentals (Spark SQL experience is a plus, not required).
• Experience with Python + dataframe tools (pandas, Polars, Koalas, or similar).
• Curiosity about learning PySpark — prior PySpark experience not required.
• Understanding of Delta Lake or Medallion concepts is valuable, but not mandatory.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research through technical challenges.

Nice To Have:

• Experience with Databricks or similar distributed compute platforms.
• Exposure to Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, or other orchestration tools.
• Basic familiarity with Azure DevOps pipelines or CI/CD.
• Understanding of ADLS, Parquet, or Delta file formats.
