The Global Compliance Counsel (12 month contract) will report to our Director, Global Legal & Compliance and provide support in several critical areas.
As a key member of our global compliance department, the Global Compliance Counsel will combine sound legal advice and pragmatism to guide the redesign and implementation of McCain's compliance programme, rooted in our global Code of Conduct. The Global Compliance Counsel will conduct research on best practices and legal requirements to inform all aspects of the global compliance programme including data and analytics, incident reporting and investigation, general and specialized training for employees, and programme structure.
The Global Compliance Counsel will manage intake and investigation of new complaints received through the global ethics reporting channels, and oversee the global internal investigations programme (including conducting investigations, supervising internal investigators and creating a training programme for internal investigations resources). They will also identify emerging trends and create and implement relevant risk mitigation plans. The Global Compliance Counsel will also guide colleagues in Human Resources to administer the annual global code of conduct recertification training.
Other key accountabilities include managing the roll out of McCain's new global third-party vendor compliance verification system, leading Compliance Week activities with colleagues in the Global Legal Department, providing strategic recommendations on execution of the global records retention and data management policies, and finding opportunities to use technology to improve the compliance experience within McCain.
Finally, the Global Compliance Counsel will also conduct research into areas of particular interest and assist with special projects as needed by the Director, Global Legal & Compliance and the Global Compliance Department.

Duties & Responsibilities
The Global Compliance Counsel will develop and execute the global Compliance programme and strategy, under the supervision of the Director, Global Legal & Compliance. This includes the following key areas of activity:
Compliance
- Business support and education:
- Answer questions and provide guidance related to McCain's Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Working with colleagues in global Human Resources, oversee the roll-out of the annual global Code of Conduct recertification training.
- Maintain global incident reporting database, including template creation and modification. Track and maintain periodic reports on compliance programme metrics; conduct research and benchmarking to advise on best practices for tracking and reporting.
- Develop (with Director and legal department colleagues) training calendar for compliance topics and build out a broader compliance training curriculum.
- Collect feedback on Compliance topics from business partners - and suggest updates to the Code of Conduct policy, training, or processes, as required.
- Administer routine compliance requirements, maintain training calendar and training records, prepare and file required reports.
- Code of Conduct Reports and Investigations
- Coordinate intake and dispatch of new cases for investigation.
- Investigate matters as assigned.
- Manage approvals of declared conflicts of interest, in coordination with local teams.
- Work with HR and Internal Audit to continuously improve internal investigation process.
- Launch and oversee the Investigations Academy, including developing templates, periodic training of internal investigators, and providing guidance and support to the investigator during more complex investigations.
- Third-Party Screening:
- Working with colleagues in Finance, Internal Audit, Cybersecurity, and Procurement, oversee and support screening of prospective business partners.
- Implement tools to perform compliance screening.
Privacy
- Assist the Global Privacy Counsel in reviewing data privacy and data transfer impact assessments conducted by business partners.
- Assist the business in responding to Data Subject Requests.
Miscellaneous
- Advise on our obligations to report on supply chain transparency as required by regulation in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and Continental Europe.
- Manage special projects outsourced to consultants or outside counsel.
- Prepare presentations and training materials, and deliver training.
- Occasionally prepare and file expense reports, book travel, and manage other routine administrative support tasks.
- Develop and implement reports for monitoring outside legal spending. Review, code and process legal bills from outside counsel.
- Undertake other ad hoc projects.
- Other projects/duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Law Degree (JD, BCL or LLB).
- 3-5 years of related experience, preferably at a law firm or large multinational corporation.
- Must Have: Member of the Law Society of Ontario or called to the bar in another jurisdiction where McCain has a significant presence.
- Must Have: Privacy designations (such CIPP/E or CIPP/C
- Ability to understand general business operations, issues and dynamics beyond the scope of basic legal issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively with members of other departments in order to support their functions as well as to assist them in complying with legal requirements.
- Efficient time management, prioritization and multitasking skills. Experience with project management.
- Strong team player, with excellent communication skills and an ability to work independently and proactively.
- Working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint and/or PowerApps an asset, but not required.
