This Position reports to:

Canada Region Leader
 

As a R&D Supervisor, you lead a team of Research and Development (R&D) employees and supports them in achieving the agreed R&D targets. You coach and develop the team, help manage technologies, platforms, and Intellectual Property (IP).

This role is contributing to the Electrification, Installation Products division of ABB Canada and is located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The work model is hybrid.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical and scientific proficiency and leadership: serves as a technical resource for the team and provides technical support for internal and external contacts.
  • Technology direction: supports the creation of technology and product roadmaps.
  • Innovation and creativity: drives and fosters a culture of innovation within the team.
  • Projects, processes, and tools: plans and ensures an appropriate project portfolio for the team. Plans capacity, people, and resources for R&D projects. Oversees efficient, timely and quality project execution and ensures financial and content supervision over the projects. Recommends, develops, and improves processes, procedures, and tools to enhance team operations. Applies and monitors appropriate development and quality standards.
  • R&D context: stays on top of technology, innovation ideas and customer and market developments to provide inputs to projects. Evaluates market requirements and provides feedback to appropriate product, manufacturing, and R&D strategies. Works with neighboring organizations and management to ensure appropriate representation of needs for the R&D team to be successful.
  • Knowledge transfer: supports and oversees transfer of technology and knowledge within the team and the larger organization as well as with external resources and communities. Ensures appropriate documentation of knowledge.
  • Network and visibility: builds, develops, and maintains trust-based relationships with internal (other R&D units, product management, operations, business management) and external (customers, standardization bodies, universities, etc.) contacts. Represents R&D team towards various stakeholders to foster cooperation. Contributes to scientific and/or technical bodies relevant to ABB R&D, inside and outside the company.
  • Intellectual Property (IP) and risk management: ensures R&D risks are properly managed. Ensures attention to IP issues and risks, particularly when collaborating with third parties. Responsible for risk and opportunity assessment and risk mitigation strategy in their own area of responsibility.
  • Finance and budget: prepares annual budgets for the team in cooperation with R&D management. Ensures efficient use of funds. Supports R&D project managers in developing project budgets.
  • People leadership and development: manages and motivates assigned internal and external resources, applying ABB's HR policies. Allocates work/tasks to team members and supervises workload within the team. Ensures appropriate staffing and skilling of the team and for the projects. Develops and acquires competencies that will be needed for the development of future products and systems. Ensures talent management through coaching, performance feedback, and provides development and career opportunities for the team members.
