Job Description

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Taxation, the Director of Tax will be a key leader responsible for managing Canada's complex tax compliance and reporting framework for a multi-billion-dollar global private equity business. This is a hands-on role that will oversee all aspects of tax compliance, provision, and audit defense, working closely with external service providers and internal Finance, Treasury, and Legal teams. This position offers an excellent opportunity for career development and growth as a tax professional in a highly dynamic and challenging work environment.
Responsibilities

Quarterly Tax Provision

  • Lead the preparation of the quarterly tax provision in accordance with IFRS for applicable publicly listed entities, including the preparation of tax provision templates and deferred tax workbooks.
  • Coordinate the end-to-end tax provision process, including the detailed review of tax provision reporting packages prepared by the portfolio companies.

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Lead the end-to-end Canadian tax compliance process, overseeing the preparation and review of partnership, corporate, trust, and foreign reporting returns against critical deadline, utilizing internal resources and external service providers.
  • Serve as the key point of contact for external tax advisors; manage information flow by liaising with the internal corporate controller and private funds teams and resolve technical queries to ensure timely and accurate filings.

Tax Audits

  • Manage and coordinate all responses to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) audit queries.
  • Lead the process of gathering supporting documentation, coordinating with portfolio companies and internal resources, and draft comprehensive responses to tax authorities.

Structural Maintenance & Advisory

  • Work closely with Finance, Treasury, Tax, and Legal teams globally to ensure the proper maintenance of holding and financing structures through the administration of tax policies and guidelines.
  • Support the maintenance of complex legal structures by reviewing funds flows, preparing adjusted cost base calculations, and calculating withholding tax on distributions.
  • Proactively monitor, assess, and guide the implementation of new tax legislation (e.g., EIFEL, OECD Pillar Two), including interpreting the impact on existing structures and gathering relevant data from portfolio companies.
  • Assist in preparing internal memoranda and other technical documentation as required for internal reorganizations and compliance support.

Requirements

  • CPA designation combined with a Master of Taxation or completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Course (Parts I to III).
  • At least 8+ years of progressive corporate tax experience in a Big 4 public accounting firm or equivalent industry experience.
  • Deep expertise in tax accounting for publicly traded entities under IFRS.
  • Demonstrated experience managing high-volume Canadian tax compliance engagements, including partnership (T5013), corporate and trust returns for complex structures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Canadian corporate reorganizations and foreign affiliate rules.
  • Proven experience with partnership/fund structures and related compliance obligations.

  • Capable of communication complex tax matters clearly and concisely to both tax and non-tax professionals.
