Job Overview
This role stewards the insight development critical to Bob’s growth strategy, combining deep understanding of consumers and competitors with strong go-to-market acumen to challenge, improve, and facilitate the prioritization of our growth agenda.  The Director, Growth Strategy & Insights will be our go-to expert on consumer behaviors and preferences (across physical and digital channels) and a trusted advisor on key strategic choices that leverage those insights.  Reporting to the Chief Growth Officer (CGO), this leader will be a core member of a management team that collectively oversees the Marketing and Ecommerce functions of the company, while also collaborating closely with the Retail organization and other cross-functional partners.  As a CGO team, we measure our success primarily on the basis of: sales growth (overall and comp stores), customer acquisition, customer lifetime value, and go-to-market effectiveness/efficiency.

Together with their direct team, this leader will own and innovate a diverse set of tools, datasets, and partnerships that will deliver the insights required to optimize our growth strategy across the enterprise.  Those direct ownership responsibilities are listed in detail below.  But on top of this ‘insights engine’, a core responsibility of the Director, Growth Strategy & Insights is to synthesize across data sources, apply business judgment, and partner closely with other leaders (both inside and outside the CGO team) to drive to strategic decisions and corresponding actions.  The ‘insights engine’ has three key elements: (1) growth investment prioritization inputs; (2) brand, marketing, and media analytics; (3) web/e-commerce analytics.  Specific responsibilities are clustered within those key areas below:

  • Growth investment prioritization inputs:

    • U.S. (national) market insights: total addressable market (size, growth); market share (traffic, sales); market segmentation (price, channel, sub-category, etc.).

    • Market-level insights: regional demand trends (size, growth); DMA-level share (traffic, sales); existing vs. new (to Bob’s) market growth potential and economics; local competitive dynamics.

    • Competitive insights: market share trends (across geographies); competitive benchmarking (marketing/messaging, assortment, go-to-market tactics).

    • Consumer insights: consumer segmentation (total market, Bob’s); consumer panel data/analytics (credit card panels and similar).

    • Business case development / ROI analysis on alternative investments (e.g., new vs. existing markets; working vs. non-working media spend; insourcing vs. partnerships).

  • Brand, marketing, and media analytics:

    • Brand health / brand tracker [quantitative, longitudinal].

    • Attitudes & usage studies [quantitative].

    • Qualitative consumer research (brand perceptions, product feedback, concept testing, etc.).

    • Creative testing [quantitative & qualitative].

    • Media mix modeling/analysis (in-house work + agency/vendor partnership).

  • Web / e-commerce analytics:

    • Traffic sources (week-to-week monitoring, longer-term planning).

    • Funnel metrics and modeling (page views, ATC, CVR, etc.).

    • A/B testing: prioritization, set-up, execution, interpretation of results, partnering to implement winning solutions.

    • Tag management / tracking (Google Tag Manager)

    • Oversight of data engineering work (with Business Intelligence / IT partners).

The majority of the CGO team operates in a hybrid set-up, working from the home office (Manchester, CT) 1-2 days per week and otherwise working remotely.  For the right candidate, this job could be designated as a remote role, but even in that case we would expect 2-4 days of in-office work per month, given that this is a highly collaborative job, integrating across many (senior) stakeholders.  There also will be ~quarterly travel (within the U.S.) for market visits, agency meetings, focus groups, and other field-based research.
