Job Description

The Compositing Artist will execute complex tasks related to digital image compositing, ensuring seamless integration of all elements within a visual effects shot. This role demands high precision and creativity to maintain the artistic and technical quality expected in each project.

Main responsibilities:

  • Create rotoscoping masks, and employ paint and compositing techniques using Nuke to craft shapes, clean plates, and remove rigs or other visual artifacts;
  • Work on a variety of shots ranging from simple to complex, managing tasks such as pre-comps, lineups, degrain, grain restoration, 2D tracking, 2D effects, keying extractions, integration, and color correction;
  • Address and resolve visual, artistic, and technical challenges, escalating complex issues to relevant departments (e.g., modeling, texture, 3D lighting) when necessary;
  • Ensure the consistency of the final composition of the elements of a visual effects shot;
  • Balance creative and technical aspects of visual effects shots, integrating 2D and 3D elements to produce photorealistic outcomes that adhere to the company's quality standards;
  • Collaborate closely with the Compositing Supervisor and Lead Compositor to develop creative and technical solutions that enhance shots, ensuring alignment with project specifications and deadlines;
  • May participate in the development of tools and techniques for the department;
  • In collaboration with the compositing supervisor, may need to provide estimates and briefs to support production;
  • Provide feedback on outsource vendor work to ensure it meets quality standards and corresponds with client’s artistic vision;
  • Perform quality control on shots before they are submitted for review/approval, ensuring all technical and creative standards are met, and promptly apply notes received;
  • Keep Production and the project team informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and recommend potential solutions;
  • Ensure deadlines are met, advising the project team promptly if delays could be expected;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of their specialty and be on the lookout for the latest technological advances in methods and approaches.

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • Experience as a Compositing Artist within the VFX industry;
  • Experience with Nuke software;
  • Knowledge of Mocha or Tracking-3D is an asset;
  • Understanding of photographic principles, including color theory, lighting, shadows, reflection, refraction, perspective, and composition;
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and act as a positive role model;
  • Excellent prioritization skills and adherence to deadlines;
  • Continuous learner, staying updated with the latest industry techniques and technological advancements.
