POSITION OVERVIEW
Assistant VP, Financial Planning and Business Partnering Group is responsible to provide strategic advice to SMC on holistic financial context of BDC from short to medium term. The role accomplishes this by leading a team that deliver value-added business analysis and operations metrics, leading to insightful and accurate business decision-making. To accomplish this, you will accelerate FP&A’s adoption of AI-driven predictive planning, scale up technology-driven delivery of decision support and improve the team’s storytelling.
Act as a strategist and catalyst by stimulating behaviors across the organization to achieve financial objectives. The incumbent will be accountable for activities such as strategic financial analysis, capital planning and continuous optimization of financial resource (forecasting and others).
He or she is also responsible for overseeing the operational activities of the financial and budgeting planning cycle, and for providing business partnership guidance to functional and business line leaders
This role leads a team of business partners, who are trusted advisor by the business unit leadership and senior executive and provide timely and valued support in matters related to financial resource and capital management and investment. Support investment decisions in new products, projects and programs or process improvement
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Lead an effective financial planning, budgeting and forecasting cycle:
Oversee the realization of the multi-year financial plan of the Corporate Plan, actively participate and contribute to the enterprise strategic planning process, and make recommendations on operational and financial effectiveness to ensure financial sustainability of the BDC;
Use planning, budgeting and forecasting to anticipate in-year decisions, mitigate risks, model and assess a range of scenarios, and reprioritize initiatives.
Establish an integrated planning process that synchronizes strategic, financial and operational plans to achieve alignment with business strategy.
Accountable on financial forecasting models and provide to senior management with the appropriate analysis and financial information to make effective strategic decision with a transparent financial impact
Advice to senior leaders, insights on financial results against budget at least quarterly, provide variance analysis, to senior management
Organize FP&A to provide world-class decision support at scale:
Proactively identify areas of opportunity and implement solutions to improve efficiency (i.e., report/data automation, streamlining duplication across reporting, etc.).
Design & implementation of management reporting aligned to the operating model.
Broaden FP&A's scale of support for operational decisions by leading efforts to embed FP&A's acumen into well-designed decision support tools
Ensure key strategic and transformational program (ex. DT and Impact) continue moving forward and create value through proper dashboard/ committee participation and structured oversight (Ex. Benefit realization)
Promote a Performance culture in BDC through the Design effective and Monitoring of key business metrics, benchmark indicators, and trend reports
Support the CFO and Finance executives as the trusted Guardian of financial sustainability for BDC
Lead a proactive and predictive analytics capability:
Champion the use of predictive analytics, including AI/ML, in forecasting, profitability improvement, cost analytics, and scenario planning.
Continuously optimize the organizational model for Data and Analytics to drive efficiency and standardization.
Steward and oversee the centralized flow of financial analyses for BDC. (single source of truth for financial and cost analysis matters)
Help FP&A director and business partners prioritize their team's queue of ad hoc support requests to ensure the appropriate balance between ad hoc and proactive analysis.
Display inspirational and visionary FP&A team leadership:
Turn FP&A into a top choice for high-performing digital talent by encouraging innovation, skills development, and mentoring.
Foster a culture of innovation, openness to change, and technology acceptance by developing D&A talent and maturing the capability of the organization.
Support FP&A analysts and finance business partners in the transition to a primarily technology-centric decision support delivery model while simultaneously improving the skills necessary to improve in-person decision support.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Experience and education requirements:
Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in Finance, FP&A, or a related field
Bachelor’s degree in Finance (a Master’s degree in a related discipline is considered an asset)
Experience within a Crown corporation and the financial and banking sector
Skills and profile
Proven ability to lead, engage, and develop high-performing teams in finance and analytics.
Demonstrated strategic leadership in FP&A, including enterprise-wide financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
Strong ability to act as a strategic business partner to senior executives and leadership teams.
Recognized expertise in financial analysis, financial modeling, capital management, and resource allocation.
Strong orientation toward advanced analytics, AI, and predictive planning applied to finance.
Excellent financial storytelling and executive communication skills, delivering clear, action-oriented insights.
Innovation mindset, with a strong focus on continuous improvement and change management in complex environments.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both French and English
