Do you want to shape intelligent recommendations that drive real commerce impact?

Are you curious about applied machine learning, experimentation, and how modern AI techniques like embeddings and transformers can power real-time personalization? Coveo is looking for an Applied Scientist Intern to join our ML Commerce team in Research & Development. Your mission? Explore, evaluate, and improve recommendation strategies that enhance product discovery experiences, while validating new AI-driven approaches that can scale across diverse commerce use cases.

The ML Commerce team’s mission is to provide impactful and scalable AI capabilities within the Coveo Commerce product, helping both merchandisers and shoppers find the right products at the right time. As an intern, you’ll help identify and explore recommendation strategies aligned with the commerce side of the business. You’ll shape the direction of these initiatives while gaining hands-on experience with embeddings, real-time personalization, and transformer-based models, including LLMs.

Your impact, day to day:
  • Collaborate with your Coveo supervisor to define project hypotheses, research questions, and success criteria.
  • Design, prioritize, and execute experiments to evaluate new recommendation strategies, including session-based recommenders.
  • Apply internal applied science best practices throughout the experimentation lifecycle.
  • Analyze experimental results, document findings, and share insights through experiment journals and team discussions.
  • Iterate on results, propose next steps, and refine approaches in close collaboration with your supervisor.
  • Contribute to exploring how deep learning algorithms and embeddings can improve understanding of shopper intent, especially in cold-start scenarios for users and products.
The Essentials:
  • You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree with a focus on machine learning or a related field, ideally graduating within the next year.
  • You are able to work from our office 2 days a week. Our hybrid work model offers flexibility, you can benefit from face-to-face learning from your team on office days while home days allow you to focus and complete complex work.
  • You are legally entitled to work full-time in Canada for the duration of the 15 week internship.
Think you’ve got what it takes? Let’s see!
  • You have experience in machine learning or data science, with a focus on modeling.
  • You are proficient in Python and familiar with modern ML libraries (scikit-learn, PyTorch, HuggingFace Transformers, Sentence Transformers).
  • You bring strong analytical skills, scientific rigor, and a genuine curiosity to learn and grow.
  • You have experience in Deep Learning or other SOTA ML techniques, particularly in recommendation systems and ranking such as embedding generation.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy discussing findings and trade-offs with peers.
